• A portrait of male Sumatran Orangutan. Orangutan is the most arboreal of the great apes. Unlike their relatives, orangutans spend most of the time in trees. A male orangutan can be distinguished from the female by size and appearance. The dominant males have a pair of cheek pad.

As the only great ape species in Asia, orangutans are now pushed into an extinction as a consequence of habitat loss and poaching. Both species, Sumatran Orangutan and Bornean Orangutan, are listed as critically endangered on IUCN Red List.

  • A baby of critically endangered Sumatran Elephant is pictured with it's mother in the Leuser Ecosystem.

Leuser Ecosystem is the last place on earth where an elephant, rhino, orangutan and tiger can be found together in the same ecosystem.
    Sumatran Elephant002.jpg
  • Sumatran Elephant is a sub-species of Asian elephant, found exclusively in Sumatra.

Listed as critically endangered by IUCN, the population is decreasing over 80% over the last three generations. Habitat loss and poaching are the main threats.

As a keystone species, elephants have a critical role on the ecosystem. The absence of elephants will definitely change the balance of the ecosystem.

  • Rosa is pictured at a CRU, Conservation Respone Unit in Aceh, Sumatra,13th July 2013.In 2012, the Sumatran elephant was changed from “Endangered” to “Critically Endangered” because half of its population has been lost in one generation. It's estimated population of 2000 individuals makes in the most endangered elephant on the planet. —a decline that is largely due to habitat loss and as a result human-elephant conflict. Sumatra has experienced one of the highest rates of deforestation within the Asian elephant’s range, which has resulted in local extinctions of elephants in many areas. Over two-thirds of its natural lowland forest has been razed in the past 25 years and nearly 70 percent of the Sumatran elephant’s habitat has been destroyed in one generation. Photo: Paul Hilton. • Local police and the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program team celebrate the successful confiscation of an infant male orangutan being held illegally by wildlife traders in a small village on the outskirts of the Tripa peat forest, Aceh Province, Indonesia. The orangutan was discovered by an undercover investigation team and was successfully confiscated by a team involving staff from the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program, Local Police and Government Authorities. According to Dr Ian Singelton of SOCP the Tripa peat forest is home to the highest population density of Orangutan found anywhere on earth, but predicted to be locally extinct if current levels of forest clearing and conversion to plan oil plantation is not stopped immediately.
